Election of Mnp assembly speaker on December 23

Manipur legislative assembly is set to elect its new speaker on December 23, the last day of the two day winter session of the assembly. Manipur Governor on Saturday issued an order, official said.
The post of Manipur assembly speaker has been lying vacant since the death of MLA Dr. S Budhichandra on September 30 last.
He passed away at AIIMS, New Delhi after a prolonged illness at the age of 61.
On the speaker’s demise, deputy speaker, Th Lokeshwor has been taking charge for the last more than two months.
Manipur Governor has summoned the winter session of the state assembly on December 22.
The business advisory committee of the assembly later decided to have two seating on December 22 and 23. The business transected during the session did not include election of the new Speaker.
However, Manipur Governor on Saturday issued an order to conduct the speaker election on the last day of the winter session.
An official in the assembly secretariat said that intending candidates can file nomination paper by noon of December 22.
Chief Minister, O Ibobi and some of his colleagues wanted to elect the present deputy speaker Th Lokeshwor as speaker, however some projects Congress MLA, I. Hemochandra as the speaker candidate.
CPI, the coalition partner has kept mum on the issue even though its member N. Mangi who was the deputy speaker in the last term of the SPF government is projected by some other members, both from ruling and oppositions.
