Agatha K Sangma, the youngest minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet Monday said corruption is not only confined to India’s political set-up, but was also gnawing away various aspects of India’s socio-political sphere.
“There is lot of cynicism amongst the people towards all politicians being corrupt, that’s not true. Corruption on the other hand is not confined to political levels, as it has entered various aspects of the country,” Sangma, the union minister of state for Rural Development, told reporters here.
She, however, said: “to rid corruption out of the country the people must be part of the solution. This is not the end of the road for anything. The people and the media are more vigilant these days and none can escape after committing something wrong.”
Further, Sangma added: “these people were more aware of their rights.”
The UPA government is under scanner for several corruption charges - the Commonwealth Games, Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society and Spectrum 2G scams.
Stating that people can rid out corruption, the NCP parliamentarian cited the example of Bihar and Nitish Kumar, where she said people voted for a person who has brought in changes into their lives.
“One man (Nitish Kumar) changed the entire system and improved Bihar. That’s why people voted because he performed exceedingly well,” she said.
When asked, the Union Minister expressed optimism that justice would be meted out in the present corruption charges too. “I am certain there would be justice done in the present corruption cases.”
