At a time when the violence is simmering and politics is spreading beyond the boundaries of university campuses in West Bengal, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is meeting Governor MK Narayanan at the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday evening to apprise him about the deteriorating law and order situation. Narayanan is the chancellor of all universities in West Bengal except Vishwa Bharati.
West Bengal has been witnessing macabre campus violence over the past week. The bloody clashes between Trinamool Chatra Parisahd and CPI(M) backed Students Federation of India (SFI) claimed two lives.
Both CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress played ‘body politics’ to foster the emotions of party cadres. Both the parties paraded dead body of two youngsters in the heart of Kolkata. In a CPI(M) rally Buddhadeb and state party chief Biman Bose placed wreathes on the body of SFI activist Swapan Koley. Trinamool Congress held similar rally with the dead body of 27-year-old party supporter Sanatan Hembram. At Trinamool Congress Bhavan, party supremo Mamata Banerjee and other senior leaders including Sishir Adhikary, Shovan Chatterjee, Sudip Bandhopadhyay and Partha Chatterjee paid homage to the victim.
The campus violence is a crude reminder of the Naxalites era in West Bengal during 1970s. The Governor has recently said there is pressing need to curb the campus violence. “If we do not react sharply, history won’t spare us,” Narayanan said.
