Six militant outfits of the northeast have called for a “general strike” in the entire region on January 26, from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m., to boycott the Republic Day celebration. A “solidarity” note jointly endorsed by Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF) convener Kh. Pambei, National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) vice president G. Rifikhang, United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) CS and executive member Poresh Baruah, Tripura People’s Democratic Front (TPDF) president Ranjit Deb Burma, National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT) general secretary and Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) general secretary, stated that the people of the region, struggling for freedom and independence, have been boycotting India’s Republic Day every year as a “symbolic rejection of India’s Constitution”. The outfits stated that the “general strike” would cover all forms of transportation, movement of all kinds of vehicles, entertainment services like cinema and theatre shows and all activities of trade and commerce. However, the note said media, medical services and religious occasions would be kept outside the purview of the strike. Meanwhile, the six groups called upon all the “freedom loving peoples” and patriotic organizations of the region to support and observe the “general strike”.
