The Meghalaya government has decided to take up the issue of recent Garo-Rabha ethnic clashes at the chief ministers' meeting on internal security to be held in New Delhi later this month.
"The Centre has convened this internal security review meeting where I would be meeting various Central officials along with Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi," chief minister Dr Mukul Sangma said. The meeting on internal security is slated to be held on January 31 and February 1.
Sangma, who visited the various relief camps yesterday in East Garo Hills advocated for close coordination between Goalpara and East Garo Hills district administration and formation of peace committees at village level to restore confidence among the riot-hit people.
Earlier, the Meghalaya government had announced financial support of Rs.10,000 and three bundles of CGI sheets for each family whose properties were damaged and set ablaze by miscreants. At least ten people were killed and nearly around 50,000 people displaced on both sides of Assam's Goalpara district and Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district.
