Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Monday got a shot in the arm with Union Minister of State for Water Resources Vincent H Pala backing him to continue as leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
“Everybody is happy and there’s no demand for change of leadership,” said
Pala, however, said if there is such demand, it is the prerogative of the party legislators to decide. “None of them (Congress legislators) have consulted me on the demand for a change of leadership in the state,” he added. At least, 22 Congress legislators are making all out efforts to oust Dr Sangma as CLP leader and to bring in former Chief Minister DD Lapang.
In the wake of the rebellion within the CLP, a section of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) leaders have even proposed Lapang’s name to Congress President Sonia Gandhi to assign gubernatorial post.
“It is upto Lapang to decide whether to accept the offer or not. I don’t want to make any comment on it,” the novice Congress MP from Shillong, said.
Meanwhile, the MPCC pleaded ignorance on Lapang being recommended for gubernatorial post.
“Whoever had made such proposal, we don’t know. Congress believes in working together but our (MPCC) president (Friday Lyngdoh) is in the know of things,” a senior MPCC leader, wishing anonymity, said.
The veteran Congress leader, however, made it clear, that the party does not believe in antagonizing anybody. “If Lapang wishes to get away from state politics then nobody can stop him but the state still requires his service,” the senior Congress leader stated.
Meanwhile Lapang’s confidante has rubbished the report and slammed against any move to assign gubernatorial charge to him at this juncture.
“He is never going to leave state politics at this juncture and any such move by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma’s camp would be opposed,” a Lapang-aide said.
Sources, said that an application was submitted to the AICC president Sonia Gandhi by MPCC president Friday Lyngdoh that Lapang to post him as Governor in any state of the country.
