Maj (late) Jyotin, a resident of Manipur, the first army doctor, would receive the highest peace time gallantry award, Ashok Chakra, posthumously from President Pratibha Patil on Republic Day for his exceptional bravery. The officer laid down his life while fighting terrorists during an attack on Indian Embassy in Kabul February 16, 2010. The award will be received by his younger brother L Boeing Singh, a PIB (defence wing) release said.
On Feb 16, 2010, Maj Jyotin charged bare handed on the suicide bomber, pinning him down to the ground. Unable to escape, the militant detonated his explosive-laden vest killing himself as well as the officer.
