Around three persons received bullet injury including a 12-year old girl when a Manipur bound bus from Guwahati was allegedly ambushed by Karbi militants at Upper Deopani reserve forest, within Bokajan sub-division, Karbi Anglong district, at around 5.15 am Tuesday. The incident occurred close on the heels of Republic Day boycott call given by several ultra outfits of North East, including a breakaway faction of the Karbi Longri N .C Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF).
According to Santipur police, the 12-year old girl identified as Jassia who was seriously injured on the upper portion of her body was taken to Rangapahar army base hospital, Dimapur.
The other two injured identified as Binod Singh (40), the driver of the bus and T. Angami (48) was taken to a hospital in Dimapur. The driver of the bus received AK 47 bullet injury on his right leg while T. Angami received bullet abrasions on the right part of his body. The bus No- MN-01-1599 belonged to Red Travels, Imphal.
Santipur police station OC suspected that lesser known outfit Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger might be behind the ambush.
Anurag Agarwal, Superintendent of Police, Karbi Anglong, told this reporter that at least 20 rounds AK series rifles were fired upon by militants on the bus and immediately fled after the incident. Agarwal, who has taken charge of the police operation inside the forest area of upper Deopani said over phone that all nearby police stations have been put on high alert, to seal off the escape routes.
