Agri Expo to be an annual event

“The State Government has now decided to make the North-East Agri Expo an annual event” announced governor Nikhil Kumar, while addressing the gathering at Civil Secretariat Plaza, Kohima on Wednesday on the occasion of 62nd Republic Day Celebration. “This will result in more marketing opportunities for our farmers and other business deals for our entrepreneurs besides our endeavors to attend self sufficient in food production,” he added.
He also said that the government was focusing on encouraging production and marketing of cash crops and horticultural produce and stated that focus was on area expansion for identified potential crops like orange, passion fruit, pineapple, banana, spice crops, vegetable etc with an integrated approach.
The governor announced that the Year of Entrepreneurs would continue to be observed during the coming year.
On the road sector, the governor said that the government would upgrade 329 kilometers of roads connecting Mon, Longleng , Phek and Zunheboto district head quarters with two lane specifications over the next three years under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North East (SARDP-NE). He also said that the Interstate Bus and Truck Terminus for Tuensang would be initiated this year and that the state was also strengthening the infrastructure for the existing helicopter service.
On the higher and technical education front, he said that the new National Institute of Technology, which was temporarily functioning from Silchar Campus at present, would soon be brought to Dimapur. The process of setting up the Nagaland Flying Training institute is also at an advanced stage, he added. Further, Nikhil informed that a new Institute of Paramedical Education was also being opened in the state through a partnership between the Central and state governments and the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research Dimapur. He said that the government intended to set up five new polytechnics, five new ITIs, eleven new skill development to centers and a Trainer’s Training Institute to train instructors of vocational education.
On the water sector, the governor said that a project to augment water supply systems and to improve waste disposal systems for Kohima town with assistance from the Asian Development Bank has also been launched which would focus on the renovation of water reservoirs in the town in the first phase. He also said that the water supply project at Tuensang town was in the final stages; water supply metering system would be initiated in Dimapur, Mokokchung, Zunheboto and Phek town this year.
In order to strengthen and supervise overall development of the Forestry sector in the implementation of the National Afforestation Programme (NAP) by the existing Forest Development Agency in the state, the governor said that a state level agency called the State Forest Development Agency (SFDA) has been constituted during the year. At present the department has constituted 736 Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) in the state and another 200 villages would be covered during the 11th plan, he informed. He added that the government was also being geared up to take up bio-diversity conservation schemes from the coming year.
