Extortionist, arms dealers arrested

: Assam Rifles patrolling party January 27 reportedly apprehended one extortionist near Jharnapani (NH-29).
The apprehended person identified as one Ayot (30), reported to be a “section officer” of NSCN (I-M) highway command collected `5 lakh during Christmas and `40,000 during New year, Dimapur police PRO said quoting an FIR registered with Medziphema police station.
According to police, the accused also collected `500 from Imphal-bound transport trucks and took documents, vehicle licence and vehicle keys of trucks (AS-01BC-6843 and MN01-7598) demanding `30,000 each from the tucks for their release when he was arrested, police said. In another incident, IR and police personnel arrested two arms dealers, one of them a lady, and recovered two AK-56 rifles along with three magazines and five live rounds from their possession while conducting MVCP at Purana Bazar January 27, police said.
The two accused identified as one James Hauzel (40) and Nenem Paite (35), both from of Churachandpur, Manipur, were travelling in a Maruti van (MN01 K-9747) when they were arrested. The seized arms were to be sold to Assam-based insurgent outfit, police said, adding a case has been registered.
