‘Mae Dam Mae Phee’ celebrated

Tai Ahom community in Assam on Monday celebrated the religious festival 'Mae Dam Mae Phee' at Diphu.
The celebration organized by Tai Cultural Society Diphu in collaboration with Tai Sahitya Sabha Diphu was witnessed by hundreds of Tai Ahom people from all corners of Assam and neighboring country Thailand.
Cultural delegations from Thailand, the homeland of the Tai Ahom were present in the occasion as special guests and president of Assam Sahitya Sabha Prof. Rongbong Terang was the guest of honour.
The delegation comprised of Dr. Acharra Phanurat vice chancellor of Surindra Rajabhat University, assistant professor Chalong Suktong, director of Art and Culture Dr. Prceda Pattamavilai, Tanik Namwattana, eminent writer and artist from Tai Ahom community.
Apart from religious rituals, speakers like Dr. Man Chao Dayananda Buragohain, Man Chao Kesebananda Dehingia and the invited guest from Thailand addressed the assembly in the open session.
Meanwhile, Dr. Acharra Phanurat highlighted the historic background of the Tai Ahoms and their migration and also stressed on the need for close cultural bind required to unite the Tai speaking community spread in various parts of south east Asia and other parts of the globe. The religious programme was followed by various traditional cultural events of the Tai Ahoms community. The cultural delegation of Thailand presented Tai traditional dance.
It may be mentioned that various clan of Tai community like Tai Ahom, Tai Aiton, Tai Tukung and Tai Khaimang reside in parts of Karbi Anglong district like Kolyani, Shilonijan, Santipur, Deopani, Japarajan, Balipathar, Bokajan Khatkhati, Diphu, Bakolia and Howraghat.
