Dibru Saikhowa beach fest begins

The three-day beach festival of Upper Assam, the Dibru Saikhowa Festival, 2011 began on Saturday with much fanfare.
The festival, which was first held in 2008 on the beach of River Dibru at Guijan Ghat about 11 km from Tinsukia town with the Dibru Saikhowa National Park in the background, has succeeded in drawing the attention of domestic as well as foreign tourists.
The festival was inaugurated by the local Member of Parliament, Paban Singh Ghatwar in the presence of Raju Sahoo, MLA, Chabua, Deputy Commission, SS Meenakshi Sundaram and Diganta Bora, Supt of Police.
The festival, organised by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) with the cooperation of District Administration and other departments of the district, has became a show case of the rich cultural and traditional heritages of the various ethnic groups of the district. Moreover, it also provides the opportunities to the self-help groups as well as individual entrepreneurs of the area for selling their products.
The festival provides information about various welfare schemes of the different departments of the government to the public under a single umbrella.
This year, the district unit of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) arranged a free medical health check-up camp on first two days of the festival.
Awareness programmes on rural development programme, like MNREGA, SGSY, IAY, SSA etc. will be held on January 10.
The cultural programmes include a fashion show with traditional dresses, folk dances and songs of various ethnic groups, modern songs, dances and others.
