A mass protest rally was organized by the Zuketsa Area Women Society (ZAWS) on January 8 at Zuketsa town in protest against the January 1 attempted rape on two minors by five youths from Khezhakeno village. According to a report received here, womenfolk numbering around 1000 - 1200 turned up for the mass protest rally which ended with the ZAWS putting forward a 5-point demand to the law enforcing authority for immediate action.
The women society demanded that the most befitting punishment be awarded to the culprits so as to avert similar violence against women in the future. It also demanded immediate security measures so as to ensure safe and free movement of innocent girls in and around Zuketsa area. Besides the demand for strict reinforcement of the dry law in the state by implementing agency/authority, the ZAWS demanded immediate arrest of all illegal traders of IMFL or alcohol in and around Zuketsa jurisdiction.
The women society strongly condemned the “inhuman act” of violence against the minor girls and cautioned that it would “never tolerate” any kind of violence against women.
During the rally speakers from the ZAWS asserted that the “shameful act” was perpetrated under the influence of alcohol which pointed to the ground reality of the lapses in the enforcement of the standing Prohibition Act in the state. Representatives from the Chakhesang Mothers’ Association, Khezha Area Mothers’ Association and Zuketsa Area Public Organisation spoke at the rally.
