United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur is understood to have set a deadline of January 31 for Naga MLAs and members of Autonomous District Councils of four Naga dominated hill district to resign. A highly reliable source disclosed that a meeting of the UNC, Manipur held on Saturday at Senapati district headquarters decided to set the deadline while reaffirming the Naga Peoples’ Convention declaration of July 1, 2010. It may be mentioned that the convention had adopted a resolution to seek alternative arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur announcing that they have severed all political ties with the government of Manipur. The meeting reportedly resolved to boycott all Naga MLAs and ADC members of the state of Manipur in case they do not resign from their respective members on or before January 31, 2011. Manipur police department has reviewed the security escort provided to the Naga MLAs and ADC members so as to thwart any untoward incidents, a police officer said. Earlier on May 5, 2010 six independent MLAs from three hills district submitted their resignation to the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly in the wake of Manipur government barring entry of NSCN (I-M) general secretary, Th Muivah into state territory and in protest against May 6 Mao Gate incident that killed two youths. However, the resignations are yet to be confirmed by the Speaker even though they had appeared in person before the Speaker to explain the reason behind their resignations. (Correspondent)
