In a total contrast report lodged by the authority of the 10th Dorga regiment in regard to the January 5 firing incident at Christian Nepali Basti under Kangpokpi police station in Senapati district, two persons sustained bullet injuries after firing occurred near Thonglang Akutpa and Songjang village under Kangpokpi Police Station of Senapati district on January 5.
Thonglang Akutpa villagers claimed that the two persons were from Thonglang Akutpa village, while the Songjang village refuted the claim alleging that the two were cadres of a Kuki based militant group backing the Thonglang village.
Thonglang Akutpa villagers on January 7 said that the clash between the villages erupted, when Thonglang Akutpa villagers destroyed poppy plants cultivated by Shongjang villagers.
The poppy plants planting was discovered by the Thonglang villager during a routine check on January 5 as part of a traditional practice of inspecting the boundary every three years. They destroyed a portion of the poppy plants as the land belongs to the village. However Songjang villagers on January 7 alleged that about 100 Thonglang Akutpa villagers set ablaze the paddy fields and also tried to attack villagers.
They further alleged that the troops of 10th Dorga Regiment, who were on patrolling also opened fire towards the Thonglang Akutpa villagers thus injuring two Thonglang Akutpa villagers. The two injured Paominlal Kipgen and Lamkhomang Kipgen (28) were later picked up by the troops, while another person went missing after the incident. In contrast to the statements made by the two villages, 10th Dorga regiment in a report lodged at Kangpokpi police station stated that the personnel of the regiment rushed to the area after receiving an information about armed UG cadres in the area. On reaching the Christian Nepali village near Songjang village, a shot was fired towards the troops after which they retaliated and after a brief exchange of fire, three persons in camouflage dress run towards the jungle slope and escaped.
