1 held for murder; residents protest

Manipur police Wednesday hinted a conspiracy behind the murder of the chairman of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BSEM), Naorem Kunjabihari on late Tuesday evening. In a follow up investigation, police today arrested the peon of the deceased officer.
According to sources, unidentified gunmen entered BSEM office located just opposite to Imphal West District Police HQ around 3:30 pm and shot dead the chairman. Later the doctors at RIMS hospital declared him brought dead due to bullet injury after examining the nature of injury in the presence of police. Further, a police officer suggested that assailant used a “pen gun” to kill the chairman.
Meanwhile, a middle rank officer of the CID hinted about a conspiracy and said that there might be the hands of some of the contenders for the post of chairman behind the killing.
Speaking in a public rally, Manipur Assembly opposition leader O Joy of MPP also hinted that some persons who were in the race for the post of chairman might be behind the killing.
On the other hand, irate residents of Kakwa who had been blocking the Imphal-Moreh section of NH-39 since yesterday night stormed the office of the board today at about 2 pm. They alleged the involvement of some staff of the board behind the conspiracy.
Residents also lodged a complaint with the chief minister by submitting a memorandum demanding arrest of the culprit(s) involved in the killing of chairman. In the memorandum, they alleged that Kunjabihari was killed by some culprits and warned that if the culprits were not booked before January 14 then they would launch agitations.
