Vivekananda remembered

Along with the rest of the country, the 149th birthday of Swami Vivekananda was celebrated in Dimapur on Wednesday with a host of activities organized to mark the occasion. The day was also observed as ‘National Youth Day’ across the country.
Marking the celebration, a procession was carried out from Railway Colony Dimapur till Ramakrishna Mission, ADC court junction, by Vivekananda’s followers. Thereafter a host of cultural programmes was conducted celebrating his birthday.
Born into an aristocratic Bengali family of Calcutta on January 12, 1863, Narendranath Dutta later Swami Vivekananda was the chief disciple of the 19th century mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and the founder of Ramakrishna Mission.
He is considered a key figure in the introduction of Hindu philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga in Europe and America and is also credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a world religion during the end of the 19th century.
Vivekananda is considered to be a major force in the revival of Hinduism in modern India.
In 1897, he founded Ramakrishna Mission, a philanthropic and spiritual organization.
