It was a shocking sight-two groups from sister security agencies- engaged in a brawl in the middle of a busy street of Dimapur.
The matter could have created a serious situation after 30 AR jawans in civvies snatched one SLR magazine of one of the IRB jawans but was later defused when higher ups of both the Assam Rifles and Police intervened.
The incident happened when two AR jawans of the 32 AR battalion based at Jalukie and reportedly under influence of alcohol, used abusive words on the foot patrolling party of the 13 NAP(IR) when they were asked to make way for traffic.
An altercation ensued during which some of the police jawans assaulted the AR jawans. One of them however escaped by running inside the Assam Rifles transit camp. The AR jawan then came out with around 30 other AR jawans in civvies to confront the police jawans. The AR jawans accosted the patrol party and overpowered the outnumbered police jawans.During the fracas some of the civilians nearby, tried to intervene but one of them was beaten up by the AR jawans.
During the fracas, some of the AR jawans tried to snatch one SLR of a police jawan but only managed to pull out the magazine and after which they ran back inside the transit camp nearby. The magazine had 15 live rounds.
By then a huge crowd had gathered outside the gate of the transit camp demanding the arrest of the two AR jawans. However, the matter was brought under control after some AR and police officers intervened.
Meanwhile, briefing media persons at East Police station, SP Dimapur Z Mero lauded the discipline of the IR personnel for showing restraint even after a magazine was snatched from their possession. “A serious situation would have been created, if the IR jawans had fired back,” he said.
He informed that the AR officials had apologized for the incident and assured serious action against the erring jawans. He said that the FIR lodged by the IR jawans was also later withdrawn and the two AR jawans held in custody were released to the AR officers present.
