Festoons and banners for the proposed Northeast youth fest of the youth initiative foundation (YIF), scheduled to be held from January 17 to 19 at Senapati town were destroyed by miscreants on Saturday.
Police suspect that the volunteers of organisations opposing the hosting of the festival in Senapati and other Naga inhabitant areas of Manipur are behind the act.
Predicting steep opposition for the NE youth fest, police intelligent sources have informed higher authorities for taking up precautionary measures.
The festival is aimed to promote the rich cultural heritage of the Northeast communities however; strong opposition came up when the organizers invited some MLAs from hill districts of Manipur to attend the function stating that it was against the July 1 last Naga people’s convention declaration to “sever all political ties with the government of Manipur”.
The Senapati district students’ association (SDSA) and All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) had called for a total ban in Senapati district and any other place within the district. They had further warned the organizers that any untoward incident arising out of force holding of the festival will be the sole responsibility of the organizers.
They banned the festival for inviting the government of Manipur in partaking in the programme.
