A couple has been booked for duping two brothers of Rs.2 million (Rs.20 lakh) on the pretext of helping them settle in Canada, police said here Sunday.
The accused -- Jagmohan Sharma and his wife Kulwinder Kaur -- are residents of Amritsar city. Police said Simranjeet Singh and Pardeep Singh, residents of Pandwa village in Phagwara district, had paid Rs.2 million to the accused couple.
They had promised the victims to settle them in Canada in one month and the deal was struck for Rs.30 lakh,” Phagwara Superintendent of Police Kamaljeet Singh Dhillon said. The victims gave Rs.20 lakh and their passports to Jagmohan in October last year. They were supposed to pay the remaining amount after getting the visas,” he added.
In December, Sharma returned their passports and said he could not arrange visas for them.
He kept delaying the matter of returning the money,” Dhillon said. Police are investigating the matter and will “soon arrest the accused”.
