A total of 5,468 vehicles sold in the Philippines from September 2008 to April 2010 are affected and their owners are being asked to contact their dealers to schedule a free repair. The cost to HCPI was not detailed.
Letters will be sent to the concerned Jazz and City owners starting Feb. 21. They can also call HCPI at 1-800-1000-Honda (46632) or (02) 857-7240 for inquiries or visit for added details.
The fix will take approximately three hours and involves the replacement of lost motion springs and retainers where high pressures between the retainers and rocker arm slippers could lead to spring breakage. The modification for the new part primarily consists of a polished contact surface for the spring.
HCPI vehicle sales and corporate communications head Voltaire Gonzales said a broken spring would initially produce a noise as debris would come in contact with other moving parts in the engine cylinder heads. The worst case scenario, he claimed, is that of a stalled engine.
No crashes or incidents have been reported due to this defect, he said, including in the Philippines.
The recall applies to the following:
• 1,142 units of the 1.5-liter 2009 Jazz model with frame numbers MRHGE88509P030004 to MRHGE88509P031145;
• 479 units of the 1.5-liter 2010 Jazz model with frame numbers MRHGE8850AP030001 to MRHGE8850AP030480;
• Eight units of the 1.5-liter 2009 City with frame numbers PADGM26509V900006 to PADGM26509V900013;
• Another 3,689 units of the 1.5-liter 2009 City with frame numbers PADGM26509V000001 to PADGM26509V003690; and
• 150 units of the 1.5-liter 2010 City with frame numbers PADGM2650AV103691 to PADGM2650AV103840.
The vehicles are part of the 693,497 Freed multipurpose vans, Fit (as the Jazz is known in other markets) hatchbacks, and City sedans -- all subcompact models -- that Honda Motor Co. on Thursday said would be recalled worldwide for the spring replacement. A total 167,883 Fits and Freeds will be recalled in Japan and the rest of the affected units are mainly in Asia, Honda said.
HCPI’s Mr. Gonzales stressed that Jazz and City models sold beyond April 2010 already carry the improved part. He added that other Honda models sold locally -- the Civic, Accord, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey and the HR-V -- are likewise not affected. -- Arnold E. Belleza
