Teachers, VECs enlightened on RTE

A one day district level seminar on Right to Education (RTE) was held on February 22 at Council hall, Mon with Kevi Liegisie, nodal officer RTE, SCERT and Shilu Ao, APO, SCERT as resource persons. The programme was organized by DIET, Mon.
Presenting keynote address at the inaugural session, Hiazu Meru, SDO Civil, Mon Sadar called upon the teaching institutions and village education committee (VEC) to be well aware of RTE Act so as to provide free and compulsory education to children below 14 years of age irrespective of sex, cast, tribe, etc. Asserting ‘Teaching is a noble profession’ he urged teachers to be active in their profession, change their mindset and keep themselves updated to impart quality education to the students.
Stressing on the duties of VEC, he said it was the responsibility of VEC to see that children are enrolled in schools, and conduct literacy campaign in their respective village. He also added that it was the duty of the VEC to maintain records of students and their performances.
SDO (civil) also exhorted the DEO, DIS, SIS, head masters, teachers, VECs and NGOs to play responsible roles for effective implementation of RTE Act in the country. The resource persons spoke on “Presentation of RTE Act”. The seminar was attended by principals, headmasters, teachers, lectures, principal ITI, VECs of the district and NGOs. Participants also interacted with resource persons on RTE Act.
