Empowerment through entrepreneurship

Pointing out that woman no longer needs to depend on a man for economic survival, and that they are at par with their male counterpart in various fields; North East Women Entrepreneurs Association (NEWEA) central committee formed way back in 1994 at Guwahati is eyeing to establish its base in Nagaland.
With this objective, the members led by president, Pramati Gahain, secretary, Renu Phukon and executive member central committee, Chitra Lekha Saikia from Guwahati held a meeting with some of the Self Help Groups (SHGs) from Nagaland at circuit house, Dimapur on Tuesday to give a succinct idea about the functions of NEWEA.
NEWEA with its motto “Empowerment through entrepreneurship”, is totally focused on uplifting the position of women by way of promoting their skills so they can earn and manage the household without depending on men.
At present, the association has its branches at Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivsagar and Tezpur, all under central committee.
According to secretary NEWEA, the branches in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are not active, but in the process of being revived. Several members of NEWEA have also been honored with national awards, while some are receiving ‘Shilpi pension’ for their magnificent creations, the association added.
Earlier, deputy director DRDA, Thüngdeno Mozhüi the chief guest of the function, observing the increasing trend of entrepreneurs in the state, urged the gathering to cope with the global issues through their talents.
She said a strong NGO was needed for the progress and growth of any entrepreneurship. For this, the deputy director urged members planning to establish NEWEA to form a federation in order to acquire fund from the government. She also disclosed the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) already launched in Assam and Tripura would soon be launched in Nagaland.
According to Thüngdeno under NRLM, financial institutions would provide funds directly to the society as well as the district.
Padmashree Sentila T. Yanger tribal weave, Nagaland in her topic “Creation of social awareness for uplifting women and grandchild through seminars, exhibitions and other related activities”, said women taking part and progressing in this kind of activities would yield a positive result in the society.
The millennium development goals which provide all round development includes- education, health, economic empowerment of women, etc., would have a huge impact with participation of women, said Sentila.
“We have been provided all round development, for this, we have to generate awareness”, she pointed out and urged the central committeee members to come up with more programmes and new designs.
Stating that upcoming entrepreneurs needed a big forum, she suggested that special exhibition in northeast be conducted to market products designed and produced by women entrepreneurs.
