Lalit Bhanot and V.K. Verma, two close aides of Commonwealth Games (CWG) chief organiser Suresh Kalmadi, were arrested Wednesday for irregularities to the tune of `1.07 billion ($23 million) in a contract with a Swiss company for time-keeping equipment during the Oct 3-14, 2010 event, officials said.
“The CBI has today (Wednesday) arrested the director general (Verma) and the then secretary-general (Bhanot) of the organising committee, CWG, 2010 in the on-going investigation of a CWG case pertaining to procurement of Timing, Scoring and Result (TSR) system,” CBI spokesperson Vinita Thakur said.
Bhanot and Verma have been sports administrators for over a quarter of a century and were the secretary general and director general, respectively, of the CWG organising committee of which Kalmadi, a Congress MP, was the chairperson.
Kalmadi’s arrest in one week
Time has run out for former Suresh Kalmadi. CNN-IBN has learnt Kalmadi is going to be arrested within a week. Kalmadi set to be arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his alleged involvement in the CWG Overlays scam. Sources say an FIR will be filed against Kalmadi soon.
Kalmadi is set to be arrested after the conclusion of National Games in Jharkhand on February 26.
Kalmadi’s role is under the scanner in multiple deals including the delays being looked at as intentional.
Earlier in the day, former CWG Organising Committee general secretary Lalit Bhanot and former director general VK Verma were arrested by the CBI in connection with irregularities in the `107 crore time-keeping contract awarded to Swiss company Omega for the Games.
Both Bhanot and Verma were grilled by CBI officials at the investigating agency’s headquarters on Wednesday in connection with details relating to the contract given to the Swiss time-keeping company.
