Around 40 people, including two photo-journalists and ten policemen, were injured here today when a protest by BJP activists against Delhi government turned violent, prompting police to use force to rein in them.
Police resorted to water-canons, lobbed teargas shells and used force to disperse large number of BJP activists who went on a rampage during the protest demanding the dismissal of Sheila Dikshit government due to “rampant corruption”.
The activists pelted stones at police, damaged two vehicles and tried to break the security cordon to proceed towards Parliament House, prompting police to resort to use of water canons and force to bring situation under control.
Twenty-eight protestors, ten policemen and two photo-journalists suffered injuries in the protest and were rushed to hospital, a senior police official said. However, BJP Delhi chief Vijender Gupta claimed that more than 200 BJP supporters were injured in the incident.
As police prevented the activists from moving forward at Jantar Mantar, they resorted to violence and tried to break the security cordon.
They also allegedly pelted stones at police resulting in the damaging of a police vehicle and a DTC bus.
Following this, police resorted to force. Some of the protesters ran into Jantar Mantar to avoid police action.
Gupta alleged that the entire Delhi government machinery was bent upon committing atrocities.
He said that at the initiative of BJP, the Lokayukta of Delhi has recommended removal of Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan today. “Chauhan had caused tax evasion of crores of rupees by conniving with a leading resort,” he alleged.
