Rio opens irrigation project in Longsa

Tsutsung Minor Irrigation Project at Longsa village, Mokokchung was inaugurated Thursday by state chief minister Neiphiu Rio.
Speaking at the inauguration, Rio lauded the successful completion of the project and expressed his hope that through this irrigation project, a number of household from the farming community would be benefitted.
Urging the people to work hard for better sustenance, Rio harped the government’s slogan of not eating the seeds but rather sowing it.
He also said that there was little chance for rice cultivation in the state due to hilly terrain. Therefore, Rio said the government was focusing on irrigation projects wherever available in order to boost the morale of the farmers.
He also reiterated that the year of farmers declared by the government was still in continuance, because farming was still on the priority list of the government, he added.
Further, he said keeping the importance of food grain for sustenance, the Vision 2020 document was made, and added efforts were being made in every possible ways to achieve it.
On the issue of conservation, Rio lauded the efforts of Longsa villagers for declaring many forests and rivers as reserved.
Meanwhile, commenting on February 8 fire incident at his official residence, Rio said the incident should serve as a warning to the people.
Although he described the incident as saddening, however, metaphorically, Rio said it signified that Naga society was burning because there were differences within the society.
Sending out a clear message to the people, Rio said if there was unity, there would be solution also. Rio said the building belonged to the people as it has housed all the chief ministers of the state till date.
Rio disclosed that the chief minister’s official residence would be reconstructed with the contributions made by the elected members from the LADP and transformed into a museum/library after the CM’s official residence is shifted to the new secretariat area.
Earlier, Rio upon his arrival commissioned the project and also unveiled the plaque. The inaugural programme was chaired by IFCD joint secretary T. Nungsang Ao.
Chief engineer IFCD also gave a brief report of the project wherein he stated that the department on observing the potential of irrigation facilities, initiated the minor irrigation project comprising of a permanent RCC Diversion Weir for headwork and a complete new channel alignment on both the banks of the river.
He added that RCC Diversion Weir is located 120 meters upstream of the Bailey bridge over the Tsutsung River on NH-155 between Mokokchung and Tuensang, at a distance of 19 kms from Mokokchung Town. Parliamentary Secretary Irrigation and Flood Control Y.Patton also spoke at the program.
