Yimchungru womenfolk from Showuba, Chessore, Shamator and Pungro on Saturday held rallies in their respective areas protesting against the formation of “Saramati Region” by the NSCN (I-M) on May 1, 2010 at Salumi. The NSCN (I-M) had bifurcated Yimchungru area into “Saramati Region” and “Yimchungru Region.”
The protesters, however, made it clear that they were not against the NSCN (I-M) but formation of the new region which they maintained would divide the Yimchungru tribe and the Naga family further. The Yimchungru organizations affirmed their stand against the formation of “Saramati Region” and suggested changing the nomenclature to “Yimchungrü Saramati Region.”
In Old Showuba, off Dimapur, the Yimchungru womenfolk under the banner of Western Yimchungrü Women Organization (Aniwüzah Lim Aliberü Arihako) held a gathering well attended by the womenfolk, youth and representatives from leading organizations of the community. The representatives expressed their opposition to the formation of “Saramati Region” by NSCN (I-M) stating that such formation would further divide the Yimchungrü community.
Asserting that Tikhirs, Chirr, Makory, Longphur and others were part of the Yimchungrü tribe, ENWO Dimapur unit assistant general secretary Achila said that the WYWH would not accept the formation of the region. She also made it clear that that the womenfolk were not against any underground or over ground groups but against the division of the tribe by forming the “Sarmati Region.”
Yimchungrü Tribal Council (YTC) vice president, Shilimtong said they were not against the NSCN (I-M) but opposed to the formation of “Saramati Region.” He said no contribution would be made to the “Saramati Region” since it amounted to division of the Yimchungrüs.
Echoing the same view Western Yimchungrü Hoho president, P. K. F. Tochu solicited answer from the NSCN (I-M) as to why the there was two regions for Yimchungrü when rest of the Naga tribe have one region each. Her urged the NSCN (I-M) leaders to consider before dividing the region into two.
Lauding the WYWO for organizing the programme and for raising objections to the formation of the region, Western Yimchungrü GBs Union president, Rijang pointed out that nobody wanted divisions within a family. He said that the division of Yimchungrüs would only add more divisions within the Naga society. Rijang asserted that the formation of “Saramati Region” would not be accepted at any cost. New Showuba Village Council Chairman also spoke at the programme.
Mass silent processions were organized by the Yimchungru Women
Organization (YWO) at Shamator, Chessore and Pungro strongly demanding dissolution of the “Saramati Region.”
Speakers at the Shamator and Pungro rallies said that the the forceful creation of “Saramati Region” was a direct fragmentation of Yimchungru tribe. They demanded one region for one tribe in order to maintain peace and tranquility in the society. Around 3500 and 3000 people attended the silent procession at Shamator and Chessore respectively. In Shamator, people carried placards reading ‘No to imposition of Saramati region in pungro area (for Tikhir, Chirr, Mukory, Longphur and Para tribes),’ ‘We demand Yimchungru region for pungro and Shamator sub- division,’ ‘Forceful creation of Saramati region means subjugation of people wish,’ ‘We condemned outdated divide and rule policy,’ ‘We support NSCN/GPRN (I-M) but opposed Saramati region’ etc.
In Pungro, hundreds of women and citizens gathered at the public ground Pungro to show resentment against the creation of “Saramati Region.”
Addressing the gathering Yimchunger Tribal Council (YTC) joint secretary said, “We are not against NSCN/GPRN but we are against creation of Saramati region.” He said that the creation of “Saramati Region” would bring social disharmony to the region.
Interacting with the press YTC joint secretary pointed out that six families come together to form the Yimchiunger tribe and so the nomenclature should be changed to “Yimchhunger Saramati Region.”
YAA, YWO, GB,s Union Pungro Sub-Division and PFPS also echoed similar views opposing “Saramati Region” and demanded for “Yimchunger Saramati Region.”
Sources said that the rally was held peacefully till the last hour at pungro despite several threats made by the “Saramati Region.” It may be mentioned that, earlier, the Pungro public organized strikes after the “Saramati Region” started forcible collection of taxes on shops and vehicles. The public had earlier resolved not to cooperate and pay any kind of taxation towards the “Saramati Region” but cooperate and render unflinching support only to the Yimchungru region.
Meanwhile, reliable sources who attended the programme at Old Showuba disclosed that a memorandum was submitted to the NSCN (I-M) suggesting change in nomenclature to “Yimchungrü Saramati region” but was yet to materialize. Sources also informed that several representations have been submitted with no tangible response from the NSCN (I-M) till date. When contacted, NSCN (I-M) leaders declined to comment on the issue.
