The outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has condemned the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSWC) for allegedly advising a woman to withdraw the FIR she had filed against two officials of the General Post Office (GPO). Shorna Choudhury, who was allegedly manhandled by Inspector of GPO, Shillong, Bijit Dutta and a Senior Superintendent of Post Office (SSP), had claimed that the MSWC had verbally advised her to withdraw the case as it could pose problems for her in the near future.
“As a panel which is looking after welfare of women, the commission should have supported Choudhury. It is ridiculous that they refrained from doing so,” HNLC Spokesman Sainkupar Nongtraw said. The Commission, he said should have work together with Ms Choudhury to ensure she gets justice but the act of the MSWC was like pouring cold water on hope of the victim to get justice. Voicing concerned on the rise in crime against women in the indigenous Khasi society, the tribal Khasi militant outfit urged both the indigenous and the non-tribal settlers in the State to desist from committing crime against women.
It may be mentioned that on Friday the MSWC had asked Choudhury to withdraw the case against the GPO officials as it can create problems for her career and her future.
