The quality of pictures on our TV screen is set to get better with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) considering a Government proposal to shift cable TV signals from analog to digital.
If TV signals change from analog to digital the viewers will get to choose the channels they want, and not pay for channels that they don’t want. From the perspective of broadcasters the High Carriage Fee regime could end. High Carriage Fee is paid to cable operators to put channels on the prime band.
About 80 million out of a total 140 million TV owning households subscribe to cable. But the proposal could turn to reality only beginning 2012 and a countrywide rollout would be done by 2013.’ The proposal for the moment has been sent to the TRAI.
