Unauthorized religious structures in Keibul Lamjao

Besides 310 unauthorized religious structures, six more structures were found in Keibul Lamjao national park in the survey conducted by Forest department recently, an official source said Friday.
The authority conducted the survey to prepare a report on the existence of unauthorized structures within the area declared as national park submission to the Parliamentary Secretariat, New Delhi. The illegal structures constructed inside the park included, Panthoibi temple, Nganuleima temple, a memorial fort (phura) and two Mahadev temples. The department had taken up steps for eviction of the said illegal structures, the source added.
Meanwhile, according to compiled report submitted by Deputy Commissioners of the districts, at least 310 unauthorized religious structures existed across Manipur, The Imphal west district has highest numbers of unauthorized structures in public places with 188 structures and followed by Imphal east with 112 structures. 14 such structures in Thoubal district, 2 in Ukhrul, 3 in Churachandpur and 1 in Senapati district. There was no record unauthorized structures in Tamenglong, Bishnupur and Chandel districts.
The survey was conducted as per a directive of the Supreme Court passed on September 29, 2009. The directive had asked all the states not to allow construction of fresh religious structures in public places, parks etc. An affidavit containing the details of the unauthorized religious structures in public places in the state has also been filed in the Supreme Court, the source said.
