He worked in a BPO at night and conned people at ATM counters during the day. M Sasikumar, a 30-year-old who holds a diploma in information technology, is now in Coimbatore central prison.
The police arrested Sasikumar, a native of Periyanaickenpalayam near Coimbatore, on Thursday for withdrawing money from the bank accounts of three persons.
According to the police, M Thomas Ponnaiah (70) of Ankalakurinchi near Pollachi in Coimbatore district went to an ATM at Saravanampatti on January 21 to withdraw money to buy sweets for his grand sons. But the machine was under repair and as a desperate Thomas looked around for another ATM, Sasikumar offered help.
The police said he took Thomas to the State Bank of Hyderabad ATM at Sivanathapuram in Saravanampatti. He offered to swipe Thomas’s debit card and got the password. He swiped the card and told Thomas there was no money in the account. After Thomas left, Sasikumar withdrew Rs 10,000 from the account, the police said. “We have arrested Sasikumar on charges of cheating. Sasikumar was working in KGISL Software Company. During the day hours, he used to hang around ATM counters to trap prospective victims,” said Saravanampatti police Inspector (Crime) T Charles.
Sasikumar had also duped D Udhayakumar at Saravanampatti to withdraw money in a similar vein, according to the police.
On January 31, Udhayakumar withdrew money from the Indian Bank ATM here. However, he forgot to log out. After Udhayakumar left, Sasikumar withdrew Rs 4,000 from Udhayakumar’s account. The police claimed that Sasikumar had duped R Mani (56) of Rs 4,500 on Thursday in a similar fashion.
The Sarvanampatti police lodged a complaint and arrested him on Thursday. The police seized Rs 18,500 and a car from Sasikumar.
