Sri Lanka’s armed forces, civil administration and non-governmental organisations continue relief work round-the-clock as floods continue to inundate newer regions in large parts of the island nation.
An AFP report said that the new floods have so far claimed 14 lives while the government put the number at eight, with two people reported missing.
Over a million people continue to be affected. A situation report of the government’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) compiled with inputs from the affected districts, said that 236,953 persons (63,594 families) are now in 653 temporary evacuation centres in 11 districts across the island. As many as 914 houses were fully damaged and 6,868 houses partially damaged
“The situation in the Eastern, North and North Central Provinces is serious as monsoon rains continue. Floods are widespread and are flowing over roads, agricultural lands and town centres,” the DMC said. Several areas of Mannar district have been flooded due to overflow of Giant Tank, while Kilinochchi continues to receive heavy rains, according to field reports.
