Naga People’s Organization (NPO) committee while welcoming the ongoing Census 2011 operation in the state said the indifferent attitude of O. Ibobi led government in respect of Senapati district should be seriously viewed.
NPO’s committee on Census 2011 chairman M.L Markson, in a press release said it was unfortunate to learn that massive manipulation on the present census by authorities on the behest of state government had been targeted against the tribals particularly Senapati district. NPO alleged that Ibobi with his authoritative machinery was widely known to be involved in hurting the sentiments of the people in the district. “Not considering the inevitable phenomenal growth of increasing population, the state government has played a hidden political game on communal card against the tribal of Manipur”, stated the NPO.
The organisation also stated the valley population had been rapidly increasing in the recent Census without any hindrance while tribal areas especially Senapati district was considered ‘abnormal’ even in 2011 Census like the case of 2001 Census. NPO in this regard questioned whether it was the policy of the majority ruled “to increase the political benefits and deny the same to those in the hill districts”.
“The present state government’s intervention in the Census operation particularly Senapati district to maintain certain percentage was a clear manifestation of depriving one’s basic right to exist with identity, such restrictions of the government against the district would only escalate the present volatile situation in Manipur”, NPO said. NPO’s Committee on Census 2011 further appealed every bonafide citizens of tribal areas in Manipur particularly Senapati district to enlist details at the ongoing II phase census operation in their respective original villages.
