Decrying the murder of a police constable, locals of Sawambung in Imphal east district Monday have set February 9 deadline to book the culprit(s).
Constable, Ningombam Sunder Singh (26) of Sawombung was shot dead near his house by four gunmen last night around 6 pm. He was called from his house by the miscreants on the pretext of having talks on certain matter, family source said.
He was on leave for his marriage.
Meanwhile, residents of Sawombung today formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) and submitted a memorandum to the chief minister. In the memorandum, they have set February 9 deadline to the government to book the culprits behind the murder and stated that if government fails to fulfill their demand, they would not accept the body transferred to JNIMS morgue.
They also demanded payment of ex-gratia and a government job to a family member of the deceased constable and to perform the last rites with full state honour.
The JAC also called for a 24-hour bandh along the Imphal-Ukhrul section of the NH-150 tomorrow (February 8) in protest against the murder and further demanded for a clarification if any of the UG groups were involved in the murder.
In another unrelated incident, following a warning from an underground outfit, a 10-days craft fair in Manipur’s Thoubal District has been cut short Monday (on the fifth day) since the opening of the fair on February 2.
The United National Liberation Front (UNLF) warned the organizers of the fair, Women’s Income Generation Centre and charged them of having close proximity with the security forces.
