The second phase of census operations would begin in Meghalaya from 9th to 28th February to determine the decadal growth of population.
Unveiling the mascot of the 2011 census, Meghalaya’s Director for census operations, KL Tariang today said, 5688 enumerators (school teachers) and 995 supervisors would carry out the head count of people residing in Meghalaya.
He added Meghalaya expects a “normal” decadal growth of 30 percent increase of population. “Roughly Meghalaya’s population is expected to grow to 28 to 30 lakh from the last census,” he said after unveiling the mascot of the census operations.
As per the last census, Meghalaya’s total population was 23,318,822 with a sex ratio of 972. People following Christianity forms the largest segment of the population with 70.3 percent followed by Hindus with 13.3 percent.
He added homeless people and several other categories of people have been included in this 2011 enumeration making it diverse and more inclusive.
Tariang further added enumeration of people living in areas of dispute with Assam would be done only after concerned Deputy Commissioners gives their approval. “Wherever the respective DCs ask the enumerators to go they would do so,” he said.
