Hovercrafts to flush out militants from Loktak lake

Hovercrafts procured from United States of America would be used by Manipur police to flush out militants from the Loktak lake, official sources said Wednesday.
According to official sources, each hovercraft has the capacity of carrying 10 different kinds of sophisticated weapons - two each of portable rocket launcher, 7.62 M Rifles, Signal, 9mm Carbine, 9mm Pistol, along with 1000 rounds M-20 ammunition, 3000 rounds of 9mm carbine, 100 rounds of .38 ammunitions of pistol and cartridge of signal and four insthaimation bombs.
The size of a hovercraft range from of 5.8 to 6.5 meter length having width 2.3 to 2.5 meter. It weights around 1100 kg to 1600 kg and has the capacity of carrying 500 to 600 kg and seven persons at a time. Its speed ranges from 40 to 60 kilometer per hour, sources added.
In Manipur, the hovercrafts would be introduced to the Loktak Protection Force (LPF), specially set for domination of the lake. State police department had already opened four stations of the LPF at selected strategic points.
Meanwhile, Manipur government authority had already given clearance for onward transportation of the hovercrafts from Guwahati and would be arriving in Imphal in the next two or three days, a police officer said.
In another unrelated episode, three KCP activists were arrested by the Manipur Police Commandos during a counter insurgency operation at Tekcham in interior Thoubal district.
Tekcham Romenkanta alias Malem alias Ichou (38) and Ningthem Khundrakpam alias Puremba (28) were arrested on Monday along with a woman activist identified as Mutum Kiranbala Devi (37). Four mobile handsets and Rs 9,500 cash were recovered from them, police said.
