Taking up the reservation issue that was triggered by a recent news report in this newspaper, the Angami Public Organisation (APO) has urged the government to reserve 60% of the jobs to Chakhromas of Dimapur, who it maintained, were the indigenous tribe of Dimapur with regard to recruitment for LDA-cum-computer assistant as against the government policy to make it open to all tribes and reservation for Backward Tribes (BTs)..
APO said while the policy for reservation in other districts was for indigenous tribes of that district and without reservation for BTs, it failed to understand the wisdom of the government in declaring recruitment for Dimapur open for all tribes besides recommending reservation of post as per the 200 point roster for BTs. APO president K.Linyu and general secretary Keneingunyü Sekhose maintained that Angamis of Chakhroma group in Dimapur are indigenous tribes of the district which was borne by historical facts attested by their fight against foreign invaders “ to protect their land”.
According to APO, the Angami tribe is divided into four sub-groups such as –Northern Angami,Western Agnami, Southern Agnami and Chakhroma living in well demarcated and contiguous areas since time immemorial.APO said the Chakhromas who inhabit areas from Piphema/Tsiepama villages till Chumukedima/Seithekiema villages are “traditional land owners of Dimapur”.
While acknowledging that though Dimapur Municipal Council has become cosmopolitan in nature, APO however said if the job reservation policy was to be implemented, it would amount to “sheer discrimination and direct insult to the Chakhroma group, who are the indigenous inhabitants of Dimapur district.”
