Security man killed; 3 injured in Imphal

A Manipur Rifles (MR) personnel was killed and three others - two Manipur Riflesmen and a civilian - were injured when militants attacked them at Shingjamei area in Imphal west district in Manipur today, official sources said.
Sources said the security personnel were attached as security guards of an executive engineer identified as Ch. Ranbir Singh of Irrigation and Flood Control Department of the state government. They said the militants hurled a powerful grenade at the security guards who came out from the house of the official at around 3 p.m. killing one of them identified as Mobi Singh and injuring two others and a civilian.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital while the body has been sent to the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital here for post mortem, sources said. Sources said monetary demand from the official could be one of the reasons.
In another unrelated incident, anguish over the news of awarding capital punishment to a watchman of Aircel mobile service kidnapped by KCP (MC), residents of Nachou in Bishnupur district blocked the traffic movement at Imphal-Churachandpur road on Thursday.
The KCP (MC) kidnapped the watchman, Khundrakpam Thoiba (28) of Nachou Kha Leikai on February 2 last in connection with a monetary demand of Rs 50 lakh from the Aircel company authorities. The KCP (MC) in a statement dispatched to the media houses in Imphal yesterday announced that Khundrakpam had been awarded capital punishment.
Meanwhile, a mob barged into an Assam Rifles post on Thursday and confronted with security personnel, after two women were killed by a water tanker of the security forces.
According to police, a speeding water tanker of the AR knocked down an auto-rickshaw in front of the Lilong Police station, killing two women occupants and injuring four others including the driver today at around 9.30 am.
Sahida Bibi (45) died at the spot while Rahina (37) was declared brought dead at RIMS hospital. Further, conditions of the injured were stated to be out of danger.
Police seized the vehicle belonging to 28 AR after registering a case. AR authorities also assured of compensation to the deceased and injured victims.
