A three-day training-cum-exposure visit programme on management of backyard poultry farm was organized at ICAR Research Complex for NEH region, Nagaland Centre, Jharnapani, Dimapur from February 6 to 8.
The training was organized for members of seven farmers’ club of Longkhim sub-division under Tuensang district.
These Farmers’ Clubs have been promoted by Better Life Foundation under Farmers’ Club Programme of NABARD and attached to SBI Longkhim Branch. Nagaland Regional Office of NABARD sponsored the training programme.
ICAR, Jharnapani provided the faculty and logistic supports. Better Life Foundation facilitated the conduct of the programme.
In every village more than 90% of the house-holds maintain small backyard poultry to meet the family requirements for meat as well as cash income.
Most of the villagers require supplementary income to sustain their family.
The members of these farmers’ clubs realized the relevance of poultry in rural economy and the need of training on scientific rearing and management of backward poultry, at the same time, concerned about the regular occurrence of chicken epidemics.
The training cum exposure programme was organized to address these issues and promote poultry as an economic activity for the tribal house-holds.
The programme covered health and feed management, disease control and some components of financial management in addition to the visit to the Poultry and Hatchery unit of ICAR.
The training inculcated the trainees about in scientific method of poultry keeping, causes for occurrence of chicken epidemics and the damage control mechanism through scientific management of poultry farm, handling, handling basic vaccination and disease control of birds and economics of poultry farms and income out of it.
