Agitating students in Imphal Saturday hurled text books at the Chief Minister’s Bungalow and Imphal Raj Bhavan registering a strong protest against government inaction to bring an end to the impasse with the striking teachers.
Students hurled their books when they could not get an appointment to meet with the chief minister, O Ibobi Singh who was out of station for election campaign for the February 14 by-election to Konthoujam Assembly Constituency.
Meanwhile, when the students went to meet the governor Gurbachan Jagat at Imphal Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum, they were informed that the governor was out of station and as a sign of protest hurled text books at the Raj Bhavan gate.
Earlier, the students in a meeting held at TG Higher Secondary School, Imphal formed an All Manipur High and Higher Secondary School Students Union Co-ordination Committee where the union convenor K Herojit warned that the agitations would be intensified in the form of burning down of school buildings if the state government fails to bring an agreement with the striking teachers and resume normal classes in their respective schools within 24 hours.
“We have pleaded chief minister for several times since the teachers started their strike to make arrangement so that the academic atmosphere is not disturbed. But, no positive action has been taken so far,” he lamented.
It may be mentioned that teachers of the government schools under Council of Teachers Association (COTA) had been fasting unto death since January 14 decrying government attitude towards the teachers.
