On Thursday former telecom minister A Raja and Shahid Usman Balwa, one of the youngest billionaire in India, were sent to four days of CBI custody, as together the duo hold the key to unraveling the 2G scam. CNN-IBN has learned that Sadiq Batcha was the link between the two. CNN-IBN has accessed a copy of the letter Shahid Balwa wrote to the CBI on December 22, 2010 accepting that his association with Batcha goes back to 2006. Balwa’s letter said he met Batcha at the Environment Ministry and coincidentally Raja was the environment minister in 2006.
“I had met Sadiq Batcha during my visit to Ministry of Environment and Forest in 2006,” said Balwa in his letter.
Balwa said he and Batcha discussed business deals in Perambalur district of Tamil Nadu, the constituency of Raja.
Raja’s wife M A Parmeshwari was a director in Batcha’s company Green House Promoters with which Balwa was negotiating real estate deals.
Balwa in his letter acknowledged his closeness with Batcha to the extent that he helped Batcha revamp and improve Green House Promoters, but also said that ultimately DB group could not complete the deal with Green House.
He also clarified that there was no pressure on him to invest in Batcha’s company. Investigators believe Raja granted 2G license to Swan and in return Balwa invested in front companies of Raja owned by his family and aides.
Raja has so far denied knowing any of the telecom operators who ultimately got the 2G license, but the letter from Balwa proves otherwise. And as CBI continues to interrogate the duo, question arises is - will CBI manage to extract a confession and unravel the entire 2G conspiracy?
