The political wave at 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency has been blowing sturdily after the demise of the MLA late Nungshizenba Longkumer, and the subsequent vacancy arising thereof for a seat, prompting for a by-election in the constituency.
According to reliable sources in the NPF, Pangerla, wife of late Nungshizenba has enrolled as an active member in the NPF on Monday at the party’s Mokokchung division office. The source hinted at the possibility of Pangerla contesting the by-election from an NPF ticket.
Mention may be made here that late Nungshizenba was elected from this constituency with a Congress ticket in the last assembly elections. Though the dates for the by-election are yet to be declared, hectic politicking is doing the rounds.
The 26 Aonglenden A/C is considered a significant seat of political prominence as it was through this seat that former chief minister Dr. S.C Jamir got elected, and it has often been referred to as a “Congress bastion”.
It gained importance as the DAN government tried to wrestle the seat out from the Congress many times, but failed so far. This by-election would prove to be a litmus test for the NPF led DAN government on whether to wrestle the same seat again.
At this juncture, both the parties have remained tight-lipped about intending candidates, however, the NPF might have a surprise package this time around.
On reasons for Pangerla joining the NPF, the source hinted that prevalence of peace, developmental explosion and the undisputed leadership of the NPF had been inspiring factors.
The source revealed that Pangerla had expressed her resolve to strive for the cause of the people and to relentlessly pursue the welfare activities initiated by her late legislator husband. It was also disclosed that Pangerla expressed her gratitude to the chief minister Neiphiu Rio and Dr. Shurhozelie, the party president for her acceptance as a member of the first politically registered party of the state.
The source further said that the NPF Mokokchung division members have heartily welcomed her to the party, lauding her “boldness and broadmindedness” and expressing their hope that her outspoken, charitable attitude and years of experience in personnel management would be an asset to the party.
