Angered by the custodial death of a man accused in drug smuggling, a mob attacked Lilong police station of Thoubal district in Manipur and pelted stones, injuring two constables and four village defence force (VDF) personnel on Tuesday.
One Md Sirajur Rehman (30) son of Md Gajur Rehman of Lilong Haoreibi Sumbrukhon died last Monday night around 10.30pm at RIMS hospital, Imphal where he was brought for medical treatment, after he fainted in police custody, police sources stated. Police said Sirajur was arrested along with one colleague, Md Majibur Rehman (24) son of Md Raju of Lilong Ayangbi last Sunday at Lilong Bazar in joint operation carried out by the police and 28 Assam Rifles troops and were in police custody.
A total of 4300 pieces of N10 tablets in 43 boxes and 1152 mobile handsets were also seized from the possession of two youth and were booked under section 400 (Gang) of IPC and from section 13(1) DC Act, alleging that they were also indulged in extortion claming themselves as underground activists. Locals said Sirajur was running a mobile handset repairing centre at Lilong Bazar and the combined force arrested him on his way home after work.
Decrying custodian death, the villagers of Sirajur, Lilong Haoreibi Sumbrukhon convened a meeting at the locality and resolved to urge to government for judicial inquiry of Sirajur’s death and award befitting punishment to the police and AR personnel involved in the crime.
