The Meghalaya Assembly today was adjourned after witnessing a war of words between Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and opposition Nationalist Congress Party legislators.
Speaker Charles Pyngrope called to adjourn the house for 20 minutes in the course of the Question Hour after opposition NCP legislators expressed unhappiness with Sangma for not providing accurate expense of damage caused during the Garo-Rabha ethnic clash.
Leader of opposition Conrad K. Sangma had asked as to why the government was unable to figure out the total loses suffered due to the ethnic clash even after a lapse of three months.
When Conrad offered to assist the government in working out the “simple” calculation, the chief minister said the government was capable enough to work out the calculation on its own and questioned the leader of opposition’s academic credential in Mathematics.
Protesting the chief minister’s remarks, Conrad, supported by his father Purno K. Sangma and brother James demanded the chief minister to withdraw his statement.
Annoyed with the remarks against his son, Purno, the former Lok Sabha speaker, now a legislator in Meghalaya assembly, accused the chief minister of being a “rusticated medical student.”
Amid the accusations, the Speaker had adjourned the House for 20 minutes. However, when the Speaker called the house to order, the leader of opposition requested members of the House not to make any personal comments.
