Manipur minister, IFCD, CAF and PD, YAS Nongthonbam Biren’s son, N Ajay Singh (27) was arrested Monday along with four colleagues for killing a youth on Sunday afternoon.
The victim, Irom Rojar Singh (21) was shot by the youth who came in a Bolero at Ghari at Imphal-Churachandpur section of NH-150.
One M-20 pistol, licensed gun belonging to the minister and Bolero were also seized, a senior police official said.
Ajay shot Rojar following a face-off while celebrating Yaoshang separately at Sendra tourist lodge in Bishnupur district Sunday.
Ajay overtook Rojar’s vehicle on way back from celebration where he shot the youth.
As a protest against the killing of the youth, locals of Wangkhei Angom Leikai Monday attempted to storm chief minister’s bungalow, demanding the CM to drop Biren from ministership.
Later, police allowed some protesting leaders to proceed and submit a memorandum to the chief minister, O Ibobi Singh.
The memorandum stated “Ajay should be awarded capital punishment and Biren, who gave gun to his son, should resign as minister or drop from the ministership otherwise,” M Babu, convener of a JAC formed in connection with the killing of Rojar said.
The dead body of Rojar was still lying at RIMS morgue as the family with the support of the locals refused to take back the body till their demands were fulfilled.
Meanwhile, the matter has been raised in the House of the state Assembly which resumed Monday after two days of Yaoshang holiday. Ibobi informed the House that an inquiry on the incident has been ordered.
Ibobi assured of tabling a written action taken report in the House by Tuesday.
Minister, Biren was noticeably absent from the Assembly.
Speaker informed that he had taken leave on health ground.
