The Tangkhul dominated hill district of Ukhrul district was likely to be bifurcated into two districts with Phungyar as another district.
Convener of the Phungyar district demand committee, MLA Wunaoshung Keishing on Wednesday said that the chief minister had given an assurance to examine the demand placed by the committee during a meeting with representatives of the committee held on Monday.
In the hour long meeting a memorandum was submitted to the chief minister who assured that he would examine for further necessary action in the interest of the public.
Phungyar assembly constituency covers four sub-division of Ukhrul district, Phungyar, Kamjong, Kassom Khullen and Sahamphung. The memorandum was signed by 121 chiefs out of 146 chiefs of villages across the Phungyar constituency.
The decision to demand district status for Phungyar assembly constituency was resolved in a meeting of the chiefs of villages of the constituency held on January 10 last at the official quarters of MLA Wungnaosung Keishing in Imphal.
Keishing said that the demand was brought considering the hardships faced by constituency people.
According to the 2001 census, the population of the constituency is around 50,000. The Phungyar sub-division is 105 km away from Ukhrul district HQ, Kamjong-135 km, Kasom Khullen-163 km and Sahamphung sub-divisions-148 km.
“I believe the chief minister will consider our plea of establishing Phungyar as the 10th district HQ of Manipur in the interest of the people,” Keishing added.
