PM, Sonia pay tributes to Arjun Singh

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi visited Arjun Singh’s home here on Saturday to pay homage to the departed Congress leader.
A sombre Prime Minister arrived at the Akbar Road residence of Arjun Singh, where his body was kept after his death on Friday, shortly after Sonia Gandhi left the residence.
Both Gandhi and Manmohan Singh expressed their condolences to the grieving family.
The veteran Congress leader, a former governor of Punjab and chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, died of cardiac arrest at age 80. A condolence meeting was organised by the Congress Working Committee (CWC).
Home Minister P Chidambaram, Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Virbhadra Singh and Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Brinda Karat also visited Arjun Singh’s house.
Many Congress workers kept raising slogans hailing Arjun Singh.
According to a family member, Singh’s body would be flown to his hometown Churhat in Madhya Pradesh where the last rites will be performed on Sunday.
A special meeting of the CWC -- from which Arjun Singh was dropped only hours before his death -- was held at Gandhi’s house on Saturday to mourn the death, a party leader said.
CWC condoles
An emergency meeting of the newly constituted Congress Working Committee condoled the demise of senior party leader Arjun Singh.
The meeting, chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi, passed a resolution describing Singh as a symbol of secular values in Indian politics. It said Singh had always fought against communal forces.
The resolution also said that Singh’s efforts to uplift tribals, dalits and the under privileged will be remembered for a long time.

Janardan Dwivedi said Singh’s body will be taken to his home town Churhat in Madhya Pradesh where the last rites will be performed on Sunday.
Senior party leaders Pranab Mukherjee and Mohsina Kidwai will attend the cremation.
The meeting was attended by all CWC members, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
In the CWC reshuffle yesterday, Singh was dropped from the party’s highest policy making body and made a Permanent Invitee.
The CWC resolution said Singh’s demise is a not only an irreparable loss for Congress but for the entire national polity.
“Singh was a such a leader that even his opponents accepted the significance of his political talent and strategy. He had some definite views on certain issues to
which he always stuck and played his role in public life without bothering for controversies and opposition.
“Singh’s greatest merit was that he never lost courage amidst challenges and faced them boldly and discharged every responsibility given to him by the party successfully,” it said.
3-day mourning in

Bhopal, Mar 5 (IANS): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has cancelled his 52nd birthday celebrations Saturday as part of the state mourning for former chief minister Arjun Singh who died Friday.The government has declared a three-day mourning from Saturday when there will be no official programmes of entertainment. The national flag will fly at half-mast on government buildings.
But the ongoing board examinations would be held as scheduled. Saturday is being observed as a holiday in government offices and institutes.
Arjun Singh died in New Delhi. His last rites will be performed with state honours in Churhat in Sidhi district Sunday.
State Bharatiya Janata Party chief Prabhat Jha Saturday went to the state Congress office here and took part in a memorial event for Arjun Singh.
