A man believed to be a cadre of the newly floated underground outfit, Zeliangrong United Front was killed on Saturday in a clash with suspected NSCN-IM cadres near Khoupum Khunou village in Tamenglong district, police said on Saturday.
The clash erupted around 10 am, the source said identifying the killed man as Pulei Rongmei of Assam’s Haflong. Following the clash, a high tension prevails there, they added.
Detail reports could not be culled out for the time as the place is very far away from Tamenglong district headquarters as well as from Imphal and due to communication gap. The place is around 80 km away on the south of Tamenglong district headquarters while it is 120 km from Imphal.
Police treated the clash as factional fight saying the new outfit was formed by defectors of the NSCN(IM) and its rival faction, NSCN (K).
The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) was floated on February 25 last with a primary aim to protect the Zeliangrong interest and its slogan is, “Zeliangrong Ringtelo,” meaning ‘Long live the Zeliangrong people’.
Police source believed that the new outfit was formed by around 10 cadres of the NSCN-IM who deserted the outfit with arms and ammunition around the second week of last month, February. The deserters joined with some cadres of NSCN (K) and formed the new outfit, they believe.
Noting seriously to the formation of the outfit, a joint meeting of NSCN (IM), NSCN(K) and NNC was reportedly also held on February 26 at a village called Atinga in Khoupum valley of Tamenglong district.
Police further reported that they got information of NSCN (IM) serving notice to the defected cadres earlier this week. However, this report could not be confirmed.
AZSU, ZYF lament
All Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Assam, Manipur & Nagaland (AZSU) and Zeliangrong Youth Front, Assam, Manipur & Nagaland (ZYF) said it has taken a serious note of the factional encounter between the newly floated Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) and NSCN (I-M) on March 5 near Khoupum. The two organizations appealed to the warring factions to stop violence at any cost.
AZSU president Pamei Tingenlung and ZYF spokesperson, Titus Kamei in a joint statement appealed to various groups to give peace a chance.
