Manipur Police has inducted three hovercrafts – military assault boats from USA – into its Loktak Protection Force with inception ceremony held at Takmu of Loktak lake Monday.
With this, Manipur police has become the first police force in the country having military assault boats.
Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who attended the launching ceremony, said air-cushion vehicle (ACV) would not only use in flushing out insurgents, taking shelter in the lake, but also in conservation of the only fresh water lake in the northeastern region.
Loktak Lake is being used by insurgents in carrying out anti-social activities in the valley areas.
They are taking shelter at the huts built by fishermen on the phumdis (floating biomass), the chief minister asserted.
With the induction of hovercrafts, police would able to dominate the lake by conducting patrolling. If necessary more hovercrafts would by purchased, he said.
The military assault boats, each having a capacity of carry 10 different kinds of sophisticated weapons, would not only use in the counter insurgency operation but also in preventing encroachment and other activities.
The Loktak Protection Force has been established with the twin objective of domination of the lake from insurgents and for enforcement of Manipur Loktak Lake (Protection) Act-2006. These hovercrafts will be used in checking violation of the Act, Ibobi said.
Emphasizing the need for preservation of the lake, the Chief Minister said that government will take up demarcation of the lake areas asserting that many individuals are illegally encroaching the shore of the lake.
