Some miscreant reportedly set fire inside the Nagaland Zoological Park affecting around 10 hectares on the North Eastern side of the Park on March 6 at around 12 noon.
According Obed Bohovi Swu, officer-in-charge, Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar, the fire was brought under control due to the timely detection and prompt action by the staff along with fire tenders and police. He said that all the captive wildlife were safe due to the efforts of the staff and the police personnel posted at the park who were on full alert to avoid future incidences.
The incident occurred when the staff on duty was having lunch at their camp, some distance away from the spot. Some miscreants entered and removed some of the freshly erected angle posts in the deer park (deer natural habitat enclosure) under construction, the officer-in-charge said.
The fire was reportedly set by the miscreants in order to divert the attention of the staff and thereby managed to escape. An FIR has been lodged at Diphupar Police Station for necessary action and further enquiry was going on. All the removed angle posts have been recovered.
Meanwhile, the officer in-charge thanked the officers and personnel of fire services department and the police for their prompt action in reaching the spot and putting out the fire before it spread further. He urged the public to assist the department in protecting the only Zoological Park in the state and also help in apprehending the culprits.
